by By Frank Borelli - With the advent of Active Shooter training that has developed in response to incidents like the Columbine High School shootings, the law enforcement community has come full circle. In response to critical incidents that the "average" cop was once called on to handle, Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) teams were developed.Alongside that development, police doctrine and training changed so that the patrol officer wasn't required to handle hostage and barricade situations. By Dennis Kennedy The recent shootings at Trolley Square, Virginia Tech and the Omaha Mall remind us that violence can strike at any time and in any place. These types of events happen all the time. They occur everywhere. They happen in churches, malls, schools and workplaces. They will happen again. Have a plan. ( Read Article) |

Most violent crimes today are committed by armed criminals, be it with knives or guns, and yet most martial artists spend the majority of their time practicing against empty hand opponents. If you have been paying attention to the news lately, you soon come to the realization that your self-defense training should be more weapons oriented and less empty hand centered. Even for those few martial artists that practice gun disarming techniques, often times the training is unrealistic and does not accurately parallel the realities of actual criminal and terrorist attacks. If you say that your gun training is realistic, then there is just one word to prove it – PROJECTILE.

America was once known as “a nation of riflemen.” Because of our pioneer and rural traditions, men, women and children used to learn from parents, relatives and friends how rifles, shotguns and handguns worked and how to handle them as safely and responsibly as any common tool. However, because of a great population shift from rural living to cities and suburbs, particularly since 1945, there has been a dangerous reduction in general knowledge about firearms.

By Michael VanBlaricum - There exist an extremely dangerous and ill-conceived idea among some gun enthusiasts that simply having a firearm will provide all the self-defense protection a person will need. Just this past weekend I had a gentleman who stopped by my booth at a trade show commenting, "yeah I don't need any self-defense training because I have my Permit to Carry". I asked this particular gentleman if he had participated in any additional training after taking his State Mandated Permit to carry course, such as Tactical Pistol, Knife Defense Training, Weapon Retention, etc. The gentlemen responded that he had not

By Michael VanBlaricum - According to the National Rifle Associations’ Right to Carry 2004 Report, 64% of all the citizens of the United States of America live in one of 38 Right To Carry States (RTC). The majority of states within the U.S. have laws and statutes that give an individual the legal right to defend them-selves. Obviously there can be vast differences between the actual mechanics of the laws and statutes themselves between different states, but the filament of commonality between the states laws and statutes that seem to be present in each state is the “Reasonableness Standard”, also referred to as the “Reasonable Man Standard”, which in short is the legal standard to weigh the actions of an individual in a use of force issue. by Uri Kaffe with Avi Nardia -Gun disarming is one of the most important skills you want to obtain when training in a martial art that claims to be about self-defense. Now that reality based martial arts have become extremely popular, many so called reality based instructors have started to show knife/gun disarming techniques without realizing that they contain deadly mistakes that can get their students killed! Events of the last several years have finally sent the “wake-up call” to the entire world. The United States begrudgingly joins with many countries in the sobering realization that safety is no longer a guarantee. Most are beginning to see the big picture. Crime and terrorism are no longer threats that happen to someone else. Violations of public and personal safety have become increasingly open and brazen. (Read Article)

By Frank Borelli - It is common knowledge that a suspect, armed with an edged weapon and within twenty-one feet of a police officer presents a deadly threat. Why? Because the “average” man can run that twenty-one feet in about one-point-five seconds; the same one-point-five seconds it will take that police officer to recognize danger, draw and point his weapon, and then pull the trigger. Even if the officer manages to get the shot off, and even if it hits the suspect; even if it instantly disables the suspect, the blade is going to be so close to the officer that the suspect’s momentum may continue forward with enough force for the edged weapon to end up injuring the officer anyway. By Frank Borelli -
Okay, on the surface, it’s an insane statement: if I have to fight someone, hand to hand, I’d rather be armed with a knife than a gun. However, if you take time to think about it, it makes perfect sense. For me, this revelation came while I was attending an Instructor course on the “Tactical Folding Knife”. I’ve always had an affinity for knives and this particular program was especially appealing to me. (Read Article)

By Frank Borelli - Do you remember your police academy firearms training? During the summer of 1986, at the local county police academy, a basic recruit class enjoyed a whole week of classroom and range training. Of the almost thirty student officers, only two or three had a difficult time qualifying on the paper targets (B27s) as they turned on a timer. The question raised by several instructors at that time was: How many of those student officers had been trained to the point where drawing, pointing/aiming their weapon and firing had become second nature? The acronym is easy to remember. The cycle itself is absolutely crucial to understand if one is regularly in harms way. In order to consistently and effectively defeat opponents, you must sequentially move through the OODA cycle whether you are aware of it or not. It is model that can be used to dissect compressed timeframes in a logical and sequential manner. All engagements whether they are air-to-air dogfights or an up close and personal, hand-to-hand confrontation, conform to this simple, powerful, and insightful model. ( Read Article) |
From Strategos International - I would like to address a core assumption that is gaining popularity: The idea that using the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Octagon, K1, so called “no-holds barred” competitions as a measuring stick for “Combatives” in Law Enforcement and/or Military work is useful to the professional armed warrior.

By Frank Borelli - In the world of police work there are many tools used to increase the officer’s effectiveness and to allow him to operate in environments that are hazardous with a minimized or at least somewhat controlled risk. Some of these items are: body armor – with varying levels of ballistic coverage and protection dependent on the duty performed; Protective (gas) mask – so that chemical agents or OC spray deployment doesn’t inhibit the performance of duties; wet weather gear – so that our uniforms and equipment don’t get saturated and/or ruined by rain; SCUBA gear – for those of us who have to do underwater search and recovery work. As you can see, there are two sets of firearms safety rules. The NRA set is taught at all NRA basic firearms safety courses and pertains to basic safety. The second set is taught at Concealed Weapons Courses and Law Enforcement Courses. Being that defensive firearms are always loaded, there must be set procedures for safe handling of firearms in these situations. Also being that private citizens and law enforcement personnel are using firearms in defense of innocent life in the public arena, there has to special consideration taken when identifying targets and their backgrounds.
