Shorin-ryu Karate
Grandmaster Dan Tosh started his training in Shorin-ryu Karate in 1958 in Coffeyville, Kansas. Over the past 40 some-odd years he has traveled and lived in the countries where Shorin-ryu karate-do was practiced long before the world-at-large knew of this incredible self-defense art’s existence.
During the 1960’s and ’70’s Dr. Dan Tosh was one of the top fighters on the tournament circuit in the United States. His renowned in that combative arena is still talked about today.
As an American martial arts pioneer and educator (Shihan) Dan Tosh has been responsible for the growth and proliferation of “Kwoondo-ryu” Shorin-ryu karate-do in the western world. He is the direct inheritor and holds the “menkyo kaiden” (inheritor’s legacy) of the Kwoondo-ryu style of Shorin-ryu. A system that was formulated by his teacher (Sensei) Musashi Miyagi.
Over the past three decades Doctor Tosh has been involved in the action-adventure martial arts film industry as a movie coordinator, stunt fighter, choreographer, talent scout and teacher. He is currently the talent scout for Stars the Agency, a member of the prestigious International Hall of Fame and the highest ranking black belt in the world in this particular interpretation of Shorin-ryu. He is the successor to his teacher Musashi Miyagi and is recognized throughout the world for his knowledge of “tuite” pronounced (two-ee-tay). Tuite is the inner meaning of kata (forms that are artfully performed by most martial artist). He was elevated to the rank of 9th degree black belt on February 28, 1998 at San Jose State University, by his teacher’s friend from Hawaii Professor Sig Kufferath. This was the official ceremony in the transition to hold the title of Hanshi (grandmaster) and become the successor to his teacher.
On February 12th, 2000 Hanshi was elected to the position of vice-president of the World Okinawan Shorin-ryu Karate-do & Kobudo Association. He assists Grandmaster Sid Campbell in broadening the scope and presence of true Okinawan Shorin-ryu throughout the United States and western world.
With Grandmaster Tosh’s busy training and traveling he still has time to perform incredible brick-breaking feats along with his demonstration team. His charitable contributions in the form of free performances are known throughout northern California. He has performed hundred’s of awesome martial arts demonstrations around the greater Bay Area. He has taught thousands of students and has awarded many, many black belts in Shorin-ryu. A vast number of his senior black belts now hold the prestigious rank and title of “Renshi” and teach at various locations throughout California, Oregon and Texas.
