Paul Anthony "The Headhunter" Buentello (born January 16, 1974 in Amarillo, Texas) is an American professional mixed martial arts fighter who trains with the (AKA) American Kickboxing Academy under trainer, "Crazy" Bob Cook.
Paul grew up in Amarillo, Texas and went to school with another well known UFC fighter named Evan Tanner. Paul received the nickname "The Headhunter" due to his propensity, in his early years of martial arts training, to kick for the head of his opponent.
In his debut in the UFC, he had an impressive win over Justin Eilers with a KO in 3:34 of the first round for his debut fight in UFC 51: Super Saturday on February 2, 2005. His next fight was against UFC veteran Kevin "The Shaman" Jordan on UFC 53: Heavy Hitters on June 4, 2005 where Buentello won with a guillotine choke submission at 4:00 of the first round. He lost a title shot against UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski at UFC 55: Fury on October 7, 2005. Buentello was knocked out on the first punch thrown by Arlovski, and fell directly on top of his opponent, which made it tough for the audience on hand, and even the announcers to realize what had happened, making for one of the most uneventful main events in UFC history. Following his loss to Arlovski, he faced off against the late Gilbert Aldana at UFC 57 where he won via TKO (strikes).
Buentello won his first two fights for the Strikeforce promotion. He defeated David "Tank" Abbott via KO in only 43 seconds. He then scored a Round 2 victory by (TKO) stoppage over veteran heavyweight Ruben Villareal. Buentello's most recent fight was against former K-1 Grand Prix Champion, Carter Williams at Strikeforce Shamrock vs. Baroni. Paul won by TKO (Corner Stoppage) in the second round.
On the website mma.tv Buentello has stated that he is interested in fighting the infamous bare-knuckler brawler and YouTube mainstay, Kimbo Slice. Buentello has said that he has talked to Kimbo's management and a possible matchup between the two according to Buentello is "60% likely to occur, 40% unlikely to occur".
Buentello is currently scheduled to fight Alistair Overeem for the vacant Strikeforce heavyweight title on November 16th in San Jose, California.
Buenotello is married and has two daughters.
