SENSEI RUSS COELHO
Kodenkan Ju Jitsu
Sensei Russ Coelho is an instructor for Pacific Coast
Academy of Martial Arts. Russ, a Hawaiian native, started his Danzan
Ryu Ju Jitsu training on Oahu, in 1957. He holds the
rank of San Dan in Danzan Ryu Ju Jitsu and also holds rank in Aikido
and Judo. He is one of the founding members of the Pacific
Coast Kilohana Association.
Sensei Coelho's first instructor was Sensei Libert
O'Sullivan, who trained for many years under Professor Sig Kufferath
in Hawaii. When Russ moved to the Mainland in 1960, he met
and trained under Professor Kufferath at the Los Altos Recreation
Dept. In 1965, he helped form and establish Nikko Ju Jitsu & Mt.
View Aiki Kai, in Mountain View, California.
Russ has trained in many forms of martial arts and
with many instructors, but nothing will ever compare to the Teachings,
Training, Disciplines, and Love he gained under Professor Kufferath. In
the spirit of O'hana, he dedicated the 1998 Gasshuku to the memory
of the late Fermin Urmeneta. Sensei Urmeneta, who was
Russ' training partner, was the first person to receive Black Belt
honors from Professor Kufferath on the Mainland.
