People who are self-training tend to believe that they are being self taught. They lay claim that they do not need a teacher or that their self progress can be as effective as one who had a teacher. Also, these seem to be the very people who crate "their own style", with the least amount of time then others who have been martial artists for years/decades, still belonging to the same system.

What do you think?

Videos are fine as supplemental material.  However, unless you have formal training then there is no video that will serve better than a competent instructor.  I touched on this in another thread.  With videos you get no partners as a rule.  With videos you get no constructive criticism, you get no feedback.  You also do not understand the art as well nor do the videos address the history and culture of any martial art.
I actually came across the website that claimed that their system was so good that they had a blind 80 year old man in a wheelchair that could easily defeat any attacker. (actually I see one such ad on this site)
For those of us who actually do train such a claim is easy to spot as absurd.  But to the person that knows little or nothing about martial arts such ads not only do the person a dis-service but they also give a false impression of what serious training actually is.
Look at the MMA programs.  Does anyone really think Dan Severn, Shamrock or Matt Hughes got where they are by watching videos?

I guess maybe not from watching videos, but at least having some form of live instruction.
