The relationship of a Sensei to the dojo is very difficult to define, as it encompasses many varying aspects of life. The Sensei must flow thru the student in many levels of communication and reach to the far corners of the student’s life. A Sensei is sometimes a father and also at times, even a mother; and adviser, and chastiser. A Sensei, though different, is the same as everyone else. He is human in a controlled way and deserves respect, for he has traveled long upon the Do (way). (Read The Sensei)

By Victor Marx - The late John Wooden said, "Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts." Today I saw courage in a way that rarely happens and can only inspire those who are privileged to see it. I went to watch the International Fighting Championships held in Long Beach, CA. This championship is legendary, dating back to the 60's. It has produced some of the great martial arts legends including Chuck Norris, who fought in it, as well as Bruce Lee who there was introduced to the mainstream of American martial artists. Airsoft guns for realistic crime and terrorist attack scenarios, stage blood all over the hands for knife disarms, criminal chemical attack defense, sniper defense, surviving a school shooting or office massacre, the first use-of-force continuum graph for civilian self-defense, protecting others using standard bodyguard tactics – these things, and more, were introduced to the martial arts community by Jim Wagner. You might say he helped change the way people learn self-defense around the world. ( Read Articles)

Translator's Introduction: Over the course of the relatively short history of karate in the West, one of the most debated and discussed aspects of this martial art has been that of kata training. Practitioners have both solicited and put forth opinions on such things as whether or not practicing kata is an effective way to learn to defend oneself, how prominent a role kata practice should play in one's karate training, the number of kata that one should "know," and whether or not the practice of kata is even necessary. Knowing where to look when standing face-to-face with a hostile person is critical, though it’s rarely addressed in training. This is a glaring omission because knowing how to use your eyes the right way can save you from getting your nose shoved over a couple inches. Before we proceed with where and how you should look, it’s important that you keep this in mind: “Face-to-face,” does not mean nose-to-nose. ( Read Article)

By Scott Sonnon ( Biography)
Doctors claimed my joint pain related to osteochondrosis, which basically means as I grew my connective tissue didn’t adhere to my growth plates like normal children and causing conventional sports and athletics to shred me, requiring my mother to rub my joints with liniment nightly as I screamed through tears trapped in a corset of agony. Severe learning disabilities - several types of dyslexia - left me with a motor skill acquisition issue, which prevented me from learning sports which came natural to other children. ( Read Article)

The goal of any martial artist is to overcome an attacker as quickly as possible with a minimum amount of force and time. All humans are genetically born with abilities and instincts to survive in extreme situations, but the training methods for improving these abilities are different in each Martial Art. Systema SpetsNaz “Russian Style” Combat carries old traditions of the Cossacks and the modern training of Special Forces.

By Sha Poe Ryu - The basic concept to passive deception is based upon the psychological control of an individual or situation by an individual or group through non aggressive actions with alterior motives to control, take over, cause change in a situation or concept or eliminate the source of aggression. Some may relate this to simple manipulation of an individual or situation in-order to control the over all outcome, however due to manipulating the mind set of an individual, one may need to use an aggressive approach as apposed to a passive one, thereby manipulation is not considered passive deception due to its ability to take an aggressive attitude. Here we will look at twelve basic aspects of passive deception and the psychology within each of them as pertains to gaining an advantage against an attacker. ( Read Articles)

By Iain Abernethy ( Biography) In this series of articles we are exploring the basics of kata application (bunkai). The aim of these articles is to open up this fascinating area of martial study for those who are relatively new to karate and similar arts, or who are new to bunkai study. Earlier in this series, we established that at close-range blocking is highly unlikely to work (too close and too fast). We also covered that the kata motions now labelled as "blocks" in modern dojos, were never originally intended to be used as blocks. ( Read Part 3)

By Stephen Spivey ( Biography) As a predator attacks, your body will go into an adrenal state. You are flooded with adrenaline (epinephrine), noradrenalin and cortisol. The good news is these chemicals perform several positive actions in the body that make them very effective. They dilate the pupils to increase the amount of light that enters the eyes, they cause sweating to help dissipate heat, they increase the heart rate and force contraction, which will increase blood flow to the muscles so they are ready to move, and they make glucose available in the blood for use by other organs. By Pat Covert for American Handgunner
Restraint versus lethal force has become a hot button issue in our lawsuit prone society, forcing law enforcement agencies and even our military branches to rethink the way our forces are trained. Measured force has been a part of martial arts for centuries dating back to the earliest forms of wrestling all the way up to more modern times when less aggressive weapons such as police batons were designed to control and subdue rather than kill and maim. Rarely, however, has a knife ever been considered anything but a cutting weapon until now, thanks to an innovative martial arts instructor and knife trainer named Bram Frank. ( Read Article)

Many scholars have pointed to intellectual and philosophical connections between Buddhism and the samurai Way, suggesting that the samurai at this time adopted Buddhist ideals. While some primary literature does point to such a connection, other literature from the Edo Period refutes the idea that the samurai embraced the Buddhist Way. This establishes that the samurai did not, as is commonly assumed, regard Buddhism in a uniform, approving manner; rather, the role of Buddhism in samurai subculture was a topic of controversy and uncertainty.
