From Struggle to Success

MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL BUSINESS BASICS FOR INSTRUCTORS By Tom Callos

I know what it is to struggle in business. I ran my school for years before it made a profit. I worked two jobs, I pinched pennies, and I suffered all because I loved the martial arts and didn't want to be anything else but an instructor. When I got desperate it seemed like everyone avoided me, not to mention that I was often too proud (or confused) to ask for help.

At a time when my chips were so down I was facing the closure of my 600-square-foot, $250 a month school, two men stepped up and helped me without ever asking for a penny. Soo Gin Lee of Ernie Reyes' Martial Arts and Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee helped me when I was down and out. I couldn't have survived as a school owner if it hadn't been for them. So, now, I return the favor.

Every week or two I'm going to write a short, to-the-point article about running a successful martial arts school. USADOJO.COM is going to try and get these messages to the people that might benefit from them. If you're one of these people, I want you to know I don't want anything from you. I'm simply going to share what I've learned --and you can take it or leave it.

I have made every mistake one can make in business --and I've had some very good years. I hope the advice you're going to read in my missives speaks to you. Let it be known that my advice should always be on tap, not on top. Use what I give you after it's been filtered through your sense of what is right or wrong --for you; at the same time, be sure to empty your cup so you have a better chance of learning something new. Good luck.

YOU ARE NOT THE MASTER
By Tom Callos

To be successful in your school you're going to have to understand that you are not The Master --you are the servant. Your job is to serve your students --and in doing this you are being given a valuable gift. Your job is to meet your student's needs. It is to be patient with them, to learn from them, and treat them the way you would like to be treated. If you think you're better than your students in any way, then you're not only hurting your business, but you're missing your most important lesson. When you go in to teach your classes tonight, put yourself in a place where you are the student --and your students are your teachers. Show gratitude that they allow you to teach them. Thank them, sincerely, and ask each and every one of them, while looking directly in their eyes, "How may I serve you better?"

If you want to be the ultimate teacher, you must be the ultimate student. You don't "earn" or "own" the title of Master --until you give it to everyone else. You are not The Master, you are the student . . . and this is where your future success resides.
