ALL THE WAY HOME TRAILER
Wounded Warriors Deep In The American West |
| Montana fishing outfitter Mike Geary was inspired by news reports to organize fly fishing trips for disabled veterans down one of the American West’s most isolated rivers. In this film, we meet a group of veterans that reflects the diversity of challenges facing our returning soldiers. Some, on leave from Walter Reed Hospital, bear the obvious physical wounds of war while others cope with hidden traumas that are invisible, yet dangerous. (More Info) |
November is a month we salute our military veterans by observing Veterans Day – in England it’s called Remembrance Day.
One day out of a whole year seems small, so we would like to make a proposal:
1. Every Martial Arts school and instructor sets up a MATV program, which would entail teaching a veteran or active duty personnel from Afghanistan or Iraq 1 or 2 (and their family) at half price.
2. A wounded veteran (including PTSD) would be taught for free, as well as their family.
3. The surviving children of any service member killed in those combat zones would receive free lessons for life.
4. As an alternative, using the same criteria, offer 6 months of classes free or at a discount.
Free or half price is a big number for martial arts schools struggling to stay open. But there would be a lot of opportunities to tout your school with the local press, and by word of mouth. Advertising your school through good deeds will certainly help boost the school numbers. And feeling good about yourself should not be discounted either.
Still not enough? How about this – Every school that comes into the MATV program after November 15th, 2008 gets a 6 month FEATURED LISTING on USADOJOCOM for $1.00 (a $120.00 value with top search engine ranking for your school).
Logistics: There are a small number of people that would falsely claim to be veterans to take advantage of this program, and not every veteran that is injured received the injury in a combat theater. All veterans will have a form called DD-214, which lists their deployments, service dates and injuries received. A quick review the DD-214 will determine if the prospective student(s) qualifies for MATV.
Martial Arts schools and students are part of the community, and this program would go a long way towards connecting with that community and teaching the students that being a martial artist does not begin, nor end, at the school door.
Give it a try for one year. 12 months of doing the right thing is not asking too much, and who knows, doing the right thing may become a habit.
