The Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system was officially established on January 21, 2003. However Jim Wagner History: A look Inside Jim’s First School in 1988 video, is a look back at the roots of the system; before Jim Wagner entered law enforcement. Wagner had mixed the various martial arts he had studied, along with his U.S. Army training, and began teaching this early form of Reality-Based publicly in 1987 before Mixed Martial Arts came onto the scene.
